Saree Stories from
the 21st Century

Threads of Tradition Woven Together With a Contemporary Twist

Have you ever breezed through a casual party or a leisurely brunch in a saree, exuding an aura of effortless poise? Or are you one of those people that are able to do yoga or dance with complete ease while wearing a saree? These are skills so many others appreciate from afar or secretly covet, yet often hesitate to embrace.

Saree Stories From The 21st Century is an exciting community-sourced and community-funded initiative that aims to celebrate the modern transformation of the timeless saree. It is a sincere and caringly constructed endeavour committed to fostering and encouraging a community around sarees.

We’re calling upon individuals of all backgrounds, ages, and genders who have embraced the saree as a versatile and empowering garment. We aim to weave together your unique experiences, styles, and perspectives on wearing the saree into a carefully crafted contemporary book.

This is our attempt at moulding the average saree-lover into an active saree-wearer!

The saree today is more than just a piece of clothing, it’s a canvas for self-expression and a testament to sustainability, tradition, and innovation.

Saree Stories From The 21st Century is a collaborative effort between Saree Sakhiyaan, a community of saree appreciators and enthusiasts and StoneMill India, a content, design and publishing studio.

By involving the community in both the content creation and support process through contributions and pre-bookings, the project creates a sense of shared ownership and involvement, reinforcing the idea that the saree is not just a garment but a living heritage to be cherished and nurtured.

Founded as a WhatsApp group with only three members, we have now rapidly evolved into a thriving community that stands for inclusivity, uniting like-minded individuals across diverse backgrounds via one fluid garment, the saree! Driven by a desire to challenge prevailing notions about sarees, we aim to transform passive saree enthusiasts into active wearers while embracing changing times and sentiments. We orchestrate an array of thoughtfully curated events designed to foster connections and kindle a shared passion for sarees. These gatherings range from intimate art walks in sarees and sneakers, to vibrant larger-scale pop-up events and community meet-ups that celebrate the versatility of this traditional attire.
